Along with Thursday's news that Tate Martell has entered the NCAA transfer portal to explore options outside of Ohio State, many fans were also surprised to learn that the Buckeyes quarterback's complete first name is actually Tathan.

Whether Martell transfers or not, the biggest revelation here is that his actual name is Tathan?— RedditCFB (@RedditCFB) January 10, 2019

Nate is short for Nathan but finding out Tate is short for Tathan is lowkey blowing my mind— Jasmine (@JasmineLWatkins) January 10, 2019

I think Tathan Martell was The Lord of Sunspear in Game of Thrones.— Tom Fornelli (@TomFornelli) January 10, 2019

Martell's mom, Tafi, told David Schoen of the Las Vegas Review-Journal in 2016 that she decided on Tate after seeing the name in the credits of a movie. However, Martell's dad wanted him to have a two-syllable name.

"I told my wife, 'When they announce a name, you need to exaggerate the first name. Tate's too short,'" said Al Martell, a former wrestler. "So, that's how Tathan came about."
