• Actor George Clooney was asked about his friendship with Meghan Markle in a recent interview.
  • Clooney used the opportunity to defend Markle, and to warn that history may be repeating itself.

When asked by Who magazine if he was in the running to be the royal baby's godfather, George Clooney was quick to shut them down. He quipped, "Oh yes, I’ll be the godfather of the royals apparently," before laughing and following up with a quick "No!"

But once the subject of the royal couple had been broached, Clooney wasted no time rushing to Meghan Markle's defense. "I do want to say, they’re just chasing Meghan Markle everywhere, she’s been pursued and vilified," he said.

"She’s a woman who is seven months pregnant and she has been pursued and vilified and chased in the same way that Diana was and it's history repeating itself." He then alluded to Princess Diana's 1997 death in a car crash, during which she was being chased by paparazzi. "We’ve seen how that ends," he said.

Clooney brought up a letter that Meghan wrote to her father, which the Daily Mail recently published excerpts from, after a People story alluded to its existence."I can’t tell you how frustrating that is, just seeing them broadcast a letter from a daughter to a father, she’s getting a raw deal there and I think it’s irresponsible and I’m surprised by that," he said.

But the actor isn't the only one in recent days creating parallels between the two royal women. In an open letter, Sarah Ferguson warned that on social media, "Women, in particular, are constantly pitted against and compared with each other in a way that reminds me of how people tried to portray Diana and me all the time as rivals, which is something neither of us ever really felt." Ferguson was pledging her support to Hello!'s #HelloToKindness campaign, an initiative inspired by the vicious attacks against Meghan and Kate Middleton on social media-which often depict the pair as rivals.
