Meghan Markle's estranged half-siblings on her father's side of the family have been in the headlines in the months leading up to her highly-anticipated wedding to Prince Harry. But were they even invited to the May 19 ceremony?
According to them, the answer is no.
"It's not just me. None of the family have received invites," Meghan's half-sister, Samantha, said on the British talk show Loose Women this week. She added that "Doria's family," referring to Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, were also excluded, but that remains unconfirmed. (Ragland, on the other hand, just landed in London today ahead of Saturday's big ceremony.)
"Although we don't understand, we can only wish them well," Samantha continued. "I'm not taking that personally nor am I holding that against her."
Meghan has two half-siblings, Samantha, 53. and Thomas Jr., 51. They share a father, Thomas Markle, 73, who currently lives in Mexico. Although the Markle patriarch was invited to the royal wedding and was expected to walk his daughter down the aisle, he now cannot attend because he's just undergone heart surgery and needs to stay in the hospital for a few more days.
Like Samantha, Thomas Jr. publicly said that he and fellow relatives weren't asked to attend the royal nuptials. "Not to mention, to top it all off, she doesn't invite her own family and instead invites strangers to the wedding," he wrote in an acerbic open letter to Prince Harry, asking him to cancel the wedding.
Thomas Jr.'s son, Tyler, and ex-wife Tracy Dooley, revealed on British TV that they probably weren't going to get invites. But even without no invitations, the mother-son duo just touched down in London on Monday, reportedly to serve as wedding correspondents for Good Morning Britain, according to TMZ.
Meghan's exclusion of her half-sister and half-brother from her big day could be explained by their strained relationship. "Meghan has no relationship with her half-siblings, nor has she ever had one," a source close to the future royal told People this month. "They were out of the house by the time she was born," the insider revealed.
Even their father, Thomas Markle, echoed those sentiments this week. He told TMZ that Samantha "has had no real relationship with Meghan as an adult" and "has no knowledge" of Meghan and Harry's relationship.
The Markles weren't the only distant relatives to be snubbed from the wedding. Some royals-like Harry's aunt Duchess Sarah Ferguson and his third cousin Lady Amelia Windsor-were reportedly left off the guest list, too.
