Every adult in Riverdale is hiding something-but the big question of season 3 is whether that something involves throwing on a mask and fastening some branches to your back to scare the living daylights out of anyone who dares play Griffins & Gargoyles. The identity of this masked menace has been the central focus of the show's third season, and we need answers ASAP.
Here's a list of everyone it could be, and how likely they are to be the Gargoyle King.
As a member of the Midnight Club, FP is a prime suspect. It’s very possible that he misses his role as leader of the Serpents and is using the Gargoyle King guise as a new source of power and control, but FP has also been very vocal of his disapproval of Griffins & Gargoyles. He definitely knows more than he’s letting on, but he seems a little too nice and anti-G&G to be Gargoyle King.
Although Hiram and the Gargoyle King have the same goal in mind-taking down Archie-it wouldn’t make sense for Hiram to actually be the masked villain. This just isn’t his M.O. He’s got all the important people in Riverdale in his pocket already. It's also unlikely the “man in black” is also the Gargoyle King.
Could the mayor of Riverdale also be the Gargoyle King? It’s definitely possible. Hermione is also a Midnight Club member and she’s made it clear that she’s sick of Archie Andrews tearing her family apart, so the mysterious King's pursuit of the red paladin could fit. Plus, the Gargoyle King has been working in tandem with Hiram Lodge, so it would be fitting that it’s a husband and wife team.
Fred might be a Midnight Club member, but there’s no way he would ever put out a hit on his own son. We won’t even entertain the thought.
All signs (and several of the adult characters) point to Penelope. She was the game master when the Midnight Club played back in high school, and she’s certainly nefarious enough to pull off something like terrorize the whole town anonymously. We also know that that the Blossom “syrup” business is involved in the whole conspiracy and that Penelope grows some useful/harmful plants in her greenhouse. But would that be too simple a solution for twisty Riverdale? Probably-this suspicious redhead is most likely just a red herring.
Alice is perhaps the only adult we can totally rule out, because she’s had her own encounters with the Gargoyle King-in high school she was in the hallway with the GK and in the present day she and Betty both saw the GK in their living room. Unless GK turns out to be something she conjures up in her mind and then somehow manifests itself in the real world (we are talking about Riverdale, after all), Mrs. Cooper is not our suspect.
It’s totally plausible that Tom Keller wants to create chaos in the town so that they see how much they need him back as sheriff. As for the red paladin part, maybe Tom wants Archie dead for exposing his failures during all of the Black Hood drama.
There isn’t a super convincing reason to think the former mayor is the culprit, aside from her being a member of the Midnight Club. Sure, she might want to convince the town that they're better off with her back in charge, but she has no motive for wanting Archie out of the picture.
Who else is there?
Honestly, it seems way too straightforward for the Gargoyle King to just be one of the Midnight Club members who have grown up to become the most powerful people in Riverdale. Here are some other possibilities:
- Edger and Evelyn Evernever: Let's not forget that while all of this has been going on, the folks over at The Farm have been watching it all go down. There was a quick denial that anybody associated with The Farm knew anything about G&G before Alice Cooper told them, but that could’ve easily been a lie. We have yet to meet Edgar Evernever, the leader of the cult, but we've seen how influential he could be. Evelyn Evernever doesn't seem so innocent either.
- Other townspeople: With that said, there could be any number of students at Riverdale High or other adults in town who are just copycats of the original Gargoyle King. What’s Pop Tate’s alibi?
- Someone we haven't even met yet: Could it also be someone like Ethel’s dad or someone who was in the school but not part of the group? We'll just have to see.
