Now that rapper Lil Xan isn't "detained" anymore, he's back to updating his Instagram, and his pictures are a daily treat to his followers, TBH. From getting to like his posts so that he'll drop some new merch info to witnessing his caption genius at work ("new pretty b*tch who dis?" is a classic), his feed is a must-see. The latest gift he bestowed upon the Xanarchists of the world is his very private driver's license number. Uh huh.
For a post alerting everyone that he's going to do a live Q&A, Xan posted a photo of his California driver's license, which included the expiration date, part of his legal name, Nicholas Diego Leanos, part of his address, and the full license number. Basically, Xan was like, "Identity theft? Never heard of her."
It might seem like the little number doesn't mean much, but apparently it can be used to steal people's identities if it gets into the wrong hands. According to Forbes, "The biggest prize for an identity thief is your date of birth and drivers license information. Thieves want this information because then they can open up credit card accounts, cell phone contracts, and bank loans all under your name." And according to the Identity Theft Resource Center, thieves "can write your driver’s license number on a check, give your license number (without the actual license) to a police officer at a traffic stop, or doctor/manufacture a license with your number to pass off to those who require ID."
Even though Xan didn't share his birthday, Google exists and he's a celebrity, so it's super easy to find out. This is all just great news for him.
Of course, some people don't realize that this information can be used against them when they post it, which is why it's best to err on the side of caution. If your friends really want to see your cringe-y driver's license photo, just Snapchat them the picture part and save yourself the headache.
