Warren to Trump: Pay Up That $1M
Now that Elizabeth Warren has taken an ancestry test that shows "strong evidence" of Native American ancestry, she wants President Trump to pay up on a challenge.
In a tweet, Warren reminded Trump that he once publicly challenged her to take such a DNA test for $1 million. "Please send the check to the National Indigenous Women's Resource Center," wrote Warren, explaining in another tweet that the nonprofit group protects Native American women from violence.
Trump has long ridiculed Warren as "Pocahontas" over her claims of Native American ancestry.
In July, he joked that he would toss a DNA test on stage if he ever debated her, per the Hill: "And we will say, 'I will give you a million dollars, paid for by Trump, to your favorite charity if you take the test and it shows you're an Indian," Trump said.
"And we'll see what she does. I have a feeling she will say no." Monday morning, however, the president denied to reporters he ever issued such a challenge: "Who cares? I didn't say that. ... You better read it again." The DNA test doesn't definitively prove that Warren is Native American.
It says her ancestry is mostly European, but strongly suggests she has a Native American ancestor going back six to 10 generations—putting her in a range of being 1/64th to 1/1,024th Native American.
(The Globe corrected the latter two figures after the story's publication.)
