Tiger Tracker: Shot-by-shot recap of Tiger Woods’ 30-hole day at Genesis Open
Tiger Woods is done for the day after playing 30 holes Friday in Rounds 1-2 of the Genesis Open at Riviera Country Club. Woods was cruising along but hit a wall late and finished with back-to-back bogeys, falling back to even par for Round 2 and 1 under overall.
Here’s a shot-by-shot recap of Woods’ marathon day at the Genesis Open.
Hole No. 3: Par 4, 445 yards
OFF THE TEE (8:10 p.m.): Tiger was hoping for just a slight kick there but didn’t get it. Tee shot ends up in the left rough, lie looks alright though.
APPROACH SHOT (8:14 p.m.): Not much left in the tank right now, that swing left a lot to be desired from 164 yards. Ended up short of the green and will have a very lengthy chip or putt coming up.
AROUND THE GREEN (8:17 p.m.): Didn’t do much with that chip, left it well short. He was cruising for a long stretch today but it’s been a grind for a few holes now.
ON THE GREEN (8:22 p.m.): Another bogey there after a miss from 10-feet and a lot of good work has been undone with four bogeys over the last six holes.
TIGER ON THE DAY: E thru 11 (1 under overall)
Hole No. 2: Par 4, 482 yards
OFF THE TEE (7:48 p.m.): Nothing wrong with that but the ball isn’t carrying anywhere. That was a solid drive and he’s still 234 yards out.
APPROACH SHOT (7:56 p.m.): Definitely not what he was trying to do, but end result might not be horrible. Sprayed it well right and into a bunker short of the green but it would have taken a near-perfect shot to find the green. Tough sledding at Riv this afternoon.
AROUND THE GREEN (8:03 p.m.): Pretty good out of the bunker. Looks like he’ll have about 10 feet left to try and save par.
ON THE GREEN (8:05 p.m.): Nope. Misses from 13 feet and drops back a shot with a bogey. Won’t be too long before they blow the horn now.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 10 (2 under overall)
Hole No. 1: Par 5, 510 yards
OFF THE TEE (7:30 p.m.): Good poke to the middle of the fairway, thinking birdie here for sure.
APPROACH SHOT (7:35 p.m.): About 205 yards out and throws an iron into the green. Not very close but he’ll take it. Chance to get back in the red for Round 2 coming up.
ON THE GREEN (7:36 p.m.): BANG. Woods drains that eagle try from 45-feet. The rain-soaked faithful at Riviera will be glad they stuck around for that one. Been a wild day.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 9 (3 under overall)
Hole No. 18: Par 4, 470 yards
OFF THE TEE (7:10 p.m.): Started drifting right shortly after it left the club and settled in the rough. This hole is enough of a challenge in ideal conditions, gonna be a really tough par from that spot.
APPROACH SHOT (7:17 p.m.): More than 200 yards out and Woods’ 5-wood approach settles into that big slope left of the green. Again, par would be a great score here with the miss off the tee.
AROUND THE GREEN (7:21 p.m.): Excellent chip from a tricky spot, maybe 10-12 feet from the hole. Well done.
ON THE GREEN (7:25 p.m.): Golf can be a really stupid game. After all that, Woods’ 9-foot par try looked good the whole way and lipped out. That’s a bogey and Woods looks to be running out of steam after 27 holes.
TIGER ON THE DAY: E thru 8 (1 under overall)
Hole No. 17: Par 5, 594 yards
OFF THE TEE (6:50 p.m.): Driver again and that’s fine, middle of the fairway. He was in the rough here this morning and will have a much better opportunity for birdie the second time around.
APPROACH SHOT (6:55 p.m.:) No chance to get home in two so Tiger just muscles a fairway wood up there somewhere in the vicinity of the green. Rain starting to pick up and not sure if they’ll be able to keep playing if the weather gets any more serious than this.
AROUND THE GREEN (7:02 p.m.): Could have used a little more mustard on that pretzel, but he’s below the hole and should be able to get aggressive on the forthcoming mid-range birdie putt.
ON THE GREEN (7:06 p.m.): Misses by a hair from 11 feet, but he’s outta there with a par after bogey in Round 1. And it looks completely miserable at Riv right now. Wet, windy, approaching 27 holes for the day, etc. Next hour is going to be a serious test if they keep playing.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 8 (2 under overall)
Hole No. 16: Par 3, 166 yards
OFF THE TEE (6:40 p.m.): Yikes. Misses the green way long and right and it’ll be a tough par save from there.
AROUND THE GREEN (6:45 p.m.): Extremely weird stance out of the bunker and not much he could do with it. Still has 45 feet to save par.
ON THE GREEN (6:46 p.m.): No go there and it’ll be the first bogey of the round for Tiger. Gonna be a bittersweet day for him, lot of positive signs but he knows he could easily be 6 or 7 under for the tournament right now.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 7 (2 under overall)
Hole No. 15: Par 4, 483 yards
OFF THE TEE (6:24 p.m.): Surprise, surprise – middle of the fairway again and 193 yards out.
APPROACH SHOT (6:28 p.m.): First bad miss we’ve seen in hours. Tried to hammer a 7-iron and didn’t work out, gonna be well short of the green in the left rough.
AROUND THE GREEN (6:33 p.m.): Tiger’s not at all happy about the third shot either. Landed it well short and the ball never released, lengthy par putt on deck.
ON THE GREEN (6:36 p.m.): He made it. That’s a huge, huge par save from 13 feet to keep a clean card in Round 2. Should still have about two hours left to go here.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 6 (3 under overall)
Hole No. 14: Par 3, 184 yards
OFF THE TEE (6:14 p.m.): Safe and sound on the green with a 7-iron to about 20 feet. Should get a good look on the birdie putt with Rory outside of his ball on about the same line.
ON THE GREEN (6:21 p.m.): Left that one short but no problem cleaning it up for par. Not a birdie hole so nothing wrong with that.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 5 (3 under overall)
Hole No. 13: Par 4, 448 yards
OFF THE TEE (5:52 p.m.): Perfect. Middle of the fairway, 156 yards out. Remember a year ago at this time, when everyone thought Tiger’s wild driver would be his downfall all season? That’s not a concern anymore as Woods has looked dialed in with the driver dating back to the start of the FedEx Cup Playoffs last fall. Given the strength of his iron game he’s always got a chance to win when he’s swinging the driver like this.
APPROACH SHOT (6:03 p.m.): Nothing wrong with his second shot. Landed left of the flag with some backspin and he’ll have a look at it. Seems like he’s completely comfortable right now on his 22nd hole of the day.
ON THE GREEN (6:08 p.m.): Really good stroke from 14 feet, curled away at the very end and it’s a ho-hum par for Tiger.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 4 (3 under overall)
Hole No. 12: Par 4, 471 yards
OFF THE TEE (5:41 p.m.): Driver has been pure for most of the day and and another good one here. Middle of the fairway and green light from there.
APPROACH SHOT (5:46 p.m.): Pretty good. Looks like it’s raining pretty hard out there at the moment but a clean strike from Woods and safely on the green, maybe 20-22 feet for birdie coming up.
ON THE GREEN (5:50 p.m.): Drained it. Great roll from 25 feet and Woods is in with another birdie. Bit of a smile there and that had to feel great after the morning he had on the greens. Overall this has been an incredibly promising day thus far.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 3 (3 under overall)
Hole No. 11: Par 5, 587 yards
OFF THE TEE (5:20 p.m.): No problem at all with the driver. Another fairway in reg. Sunset is about three hours away, so probably looking at about 12 holes total in Round 2 before they blow the horn.
APPROACH SHOT (5:28 p.m.): Solid second shot from 275 yards out, he’s going to be just short of the green with a good chance to get up-and-down and start the second round birdie-birdie.
AROUND THE GREEN (5:33 p.m.): Woods opted to putt that one from off the green and it might have cost him. Left it well short and has work to do for a birdie.
ON THE GREEN (5:38 p.m.): Birdie try doesn’t go and he’ll clean that up for a tap-in par. No damage done.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 2 (2 under overall)
Hole No. 10: Par 4, 305 yards
OFF THE TEE (5:02 p.m.): Driver again at the par-4 10th and he’s in a decent spot short of the green. Hope you got a quick bite or tended to responsibilities during the 30-minute break because we’re not going anywhere. Pull up a chair and let’s do this.
APPROACH SHOT (5:08 p.m.): Great chip and Woods will have a very solid birdie try right out of the gates this afternoon. Let’s see if that break helped him with the flat stick.
ON THE GREEN (5:16 p.m.): Drains that 6-footer for birdie and we’re off and running again. Good confidence boost with the putter to start the afternoon.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 1 (2 under overall)
Tiger shot 1-under 70 Friday morning despite four three-puts, tying the most for his career in a single round. Here’s a shot-by-shot recap of Round 1.
Hole No. 18: Par 4, 474 yards
OFF THE TEE (4:12 p.m.): Absolutely piped and Woods was probably a good 15-20 steps past the tee box before that one even landed safely in the fairway. Once Woods finishes up here he’ll be back on the tee for Round 2 at 5:02 p.m. and play until dark, so we’ll continue to track the second round right here.
APPROACH SHOT (4:18 p.m.): Hits 7-iron from 195 yards out and it’s a good one, maybe 18 feet short of the hole. Uphill birdie try coming to try to finish the round at 2 under par.
ON THE GREEN: (4:25 p.m.): Can’t get the birdie try to fall and he’ll tap in for a par and a round of 1-under 70. Back at it in a bout 35 minutes.
Hole No. 17: Par 5, 596 yards
OFF THE TEE (3:52 p.m.): Big swing with the driver and he misses the fairway wide left. No chance of getting home in two from there, about 313 yards out.
FROM THE ROUGH (3:56 p.m.): Not much he could do with that shot, but the layup from the rough trickled through the fairway and into the left rough. Not ideal but still should have a chance to put something in there close.
APPROACH SHOT (4:02 p.m.): Rain starting to come down as Tiger hits a good wedge into the green from the right rough. Going to have a 19-footer for birdie and would love to add one more circle on the card before starting his second round this afternoon.
ON THE GREEN (4:05 p.m.): Uh oh. Missed the birdie try long and missed again from inside three feet for his fourth (!) three-putt bogey on the day. That’s a gut punch.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 17
Hole No. 16: Par 3, 167 yards
OFF THE TEE (3:42 p.m.): Hit a little low draw there that worked out nicely and provided some enjoyable traj. Tiger will have 29 feet left for the birdie try.
ON THE GREEN (3:48 p.m.): Nothing to see here, routine two-putt par. Par-5 coming up and a birdie there would get Woods inside the top 15 on the leaderboard.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 16
Hole No. 15: Par 4, 473 yards
OFF THE TEE (3:27 p.m.): Useful. Drives it to the left side of the fairway and will have about 181 yards left to the hole.
APPROACH SHOT (3:33 p.m.): Not bad at all. Went with a draw into a left pin and carried it a little left of the flag, safely on the green. Has to be thinking he can get into the clubhouse at 3-under for the round with another par-5 still to be played. That would be a great morning considering the early putting struggles.
ON THE GREEN (3:39 p.m.): Little quicker than Woods expected and he runs it maybe 4-5 feet past the hole. Makes his par putt from there and everything appears to be in order with three holes left in his opening round.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 15
Hole No. 14: Par 3, 177 yards
OFF THE TEE (3:18 p.m.): As we were just saying, Woods can seriously contend all week with this swing. Another great iron shot off the tee and he’s in there for another good birdie try. Let’s see if he can put the frustrations aside and take advantage.
ON THE GREEN (3:24 p.m.): Money. Makes a 12-footer for birdie and an entertaining round continues. Lot of promising signs throughout the morning and playing 27-plus holes today might actually be a good thing considering how comfortable he looks tee-to-green so far. Onward.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 14
Hole No. 13: Par 4, 450 yards
OFF THE TEE (3:02 p.m.): Unleashed a bit of frustration there and pummeled a drive into the fairway. Don’t see anything wrong with the swing this morning, all of his troubles have come on the greens.
APPROACH SHOT (3:09 p.m.): Another beauty from the fairway, in there nice and tight to about five feet and a chance to atone for the bogey at 12.
ON THE GREEN (3:15 p.m.): Nope. That’s a brutal miss. Still out of there with a par to stay 1 under but he’s swinging well enough to be near the top of the leaderboard. Lot of missed opportunities on the greens.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 13
Hole No. 12: Par 4, 477 yards
OFF THE TEE (2:46 p.m.): Woods pulls driver again and was watching that one the entire time, ends up in the right rough. Has 208 yards left from the thick stuff, so you officially have our permission to freak out if he makes it five straight birdies here.
APPROACH SHOT (2:51 p.m.): Got a 65-foot putt coming up, but at least he’s on the green safely. Pretty good from that far out in the rough. Avoiding big mistakes is the name of the game now that he’s cruising along at 2 under, which currently has him at T-26.
ON THE GREEN (2:58 p.m.): Nice touch on that lag putt. Went a little long, but he misses the comebacker from 6 feet and has his third three-putt bogey of the day. That’s a momentum killer.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 12
Hole No. 11: Par 5, 567 yards
OFF THE TEE (2:20 p.m.): Yet another strong drive and Tiger is most likely going to try to reach this one in two. That three-putt bogey at No. 7 suddenly seems like a long time ago.
APPROACH SHOT (2:30 p.m.): Nothing to complain about there. Good swing from 268 yards out and the ball settles just in front of the green. He’ll be thinking four straight birdies when he gets up there.
AROUND THE GREEN (2:35 p.m.): Not his best effort. Still a good look at birdie, but he was thinking tap-in or maybe even holing it for eagle.
ON THE GREEN (2:38 p.m.): Yessir! Drains the 7-footer for birdie and that’s four in a row. We’re cooking with fire now, folks. Don’t go anywhere.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 11
Hole No. 10: Par 4, 305 yards
OFF THE TEE (2:03 p.m.): No laying up for Tiger at the iconic 10th, he pulls driver and ends up long and left. Gonna be an extremely tricky chip to get up-and-down for birdie. Also will have to wait a bit for Jon Rahm, Matt Kuchar and Bryson DeChambeau to finish the hole, they let Woods and Co. hit their tee shots and are getting ready to play their second shots now.
AROUND THE GREEN (2:11 p.m.): That is just fantastic from there. Lofted it over the bunker into a small landing area and has a really good chance for a third consecutive birdie coming up.
ON THE GREEN (2:18 p.m.): Buckets. That birdie putt falls from about five feet, Woods now with three birdies in a row for those keeping score from home.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 10
Hole No. 9: Par 4, 407 yards
OFF THE TEE (1:39 p.m.): Driver, fairway. Clearly feeling comfortable on the tee and maybe a little extra something in his step now after that birdie at eight. Gonna be another wedge into the green, about 122 yards out.
APPROACH SHOT (1:44 p.m.): Oh yeah. Threw a dart in there and spun it back hole high, best birdie look of the day coming up in a few minutes. Even par at the turn would be an accomplishment given his early struggles with the putter.
ON THE GREEN (1:49 p.m.): Count it. Drains that 4-footer and it’s back-to-back birdies for Woods to finish the front nine at even par. Solid way to bounce back from a rough start, especially considering he knows this is going to be a long day of golf. Huge momentum boost making the turn.
TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 9
Hole No. 8: Par 4, 420 yards
OFF THE TEE (1:23 p.m.): Back to the driver and another big poke into the middle of the fairway. Just a wedge from there. Everything looks fine tee-to-green so far, just really struggling on the greens. Needs to get over that three-putt from 17 feet a few minutes ago, but Woods might still be the best in the world at taking things one shot at a time.
APPROACH SHOT (1:29 p.m.): Not terrible. Wanted something really close there from 125 yards out but nothing wrong with the end result. Gonna be a 14-foot birdie try coming up.
ON THE GREEN (1:33 p.m.): Boom! Finally gets something going and drains that birdie putt dead center. Really hasn’t had any momentum since the deflating par at the first, let’s see what he can do after his first birdie of the day.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 8
Hole No. 7: Par 4, 417 yards
OFF THE TEE (1:03 p.m.): Looks like he went with a 3-wood there and grooved one into the fairway. Woods debuted new clubs at Torrey Pines and said he put a new 3-wood in the bag this week at Riviera. You can read his reasons for doing so and more right here.
APPROACH SHOT (1:09 p.m.): Distance was good, settles about pin high again but just on the fringe. Shouldn’t be too much of an issue on the upcoming birdie try.
ON THE GREEN (1:14 p.m.): Woof. Had an uphill 17-footer and never gave it a chance. That one ended a few feet past the hole and he had to mark the par try from 3 feet. Sent the par putt flying past the hole for an ugly, 3-putt bogey. Not good.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 over thru 7
Hole No. 6: Par 3, 146 yards
OFF THE TEE (12:51 p.m.): Just an easy 9-iron for Woods and he lands it left and hole high. Another birdie opportunity coming up from 24 feet. He’s inside Rory McIlroy’s ball on the same line, so he’ll get a good look at it.
ON THE GREEN (12:56 p.m.): Nope. Another good roll that snuck right up to the cup without falling. Ends up with a no-sweat par with four consecutive par-4s coming up.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 6
Hole No. 5: Par 4, 436 yards
OFF THE TEE (12:35 p.m.): In the left rough again, but he’s missing fairways by slim margins. Nothing to be concerned about there. Has 171 yards to the hole.
APPROACH SHOT (12:38 p.m.): Pretty good there, landed it hole high on the left side before it spun back a touch. Won’t be an easy birdie putt but at least he’ll have a look at it.
ON THE GREEN (12:44 p.m.): Great roll from 43 feet. Left it inches short and he’ll tap in for an easy par. Woods knew he was seven shots off the lead when he teed off and just needs to stay patient early as he knocks off the rust. Lot of golf left.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 5
Hole No. 4: Par 3, 194 yards
OFF THE TEE (12:23 p.m.): That’s more like it. Great iron shot and he’ll have a chance to make up for that bogey right away here with a good birdie chance at the fourth from 15 feet. Also can’t help but notice a very aggressive gallery member playing all the hits with “LIGHT THE CANDLE” and “TIGERRRRRR”. Maybe take it down a notch pal, it’s not even 9:30 a.m. local time.
ON THE GREEN (12:29 p.m.): Another good roll with the proper speed that just wasn’t on line. Kind of a continuation of what we saw at Torrey Pines, where pace on the greens was solid and he was happy with the stroke but just had trouble reading some of those putts. Tap-in par and on to the next.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 4
Hole No. 3: Par 4, 443 yards
OFF THE TEE (12:06 p.m.): Steady as she goes with driver thus far today. Timing and rhythm looks good, that one landed in the fairway and trickled into the left rough. Ball is sitting up though and shouldn’t give him any problems. Just 130 yards to the hole from here.
APPROACH SHOT (12:12 p.m.): Lot of spin on that one coming into the green and it’s well short of the flag. Leaves himself a testy two-putt here from 63 feet away, let’s see how the lag putting looks first thing in the morning.
ON THE GREEN (12:15 p.m.): Speed looked good but he just didn’t see the line on that long putt. Gonna be a real knee-knocker for par coming up, and Woods races that one by from 7 feet for bogey. Looking a little rusty early in his opening round.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 3
Hole No. 2: Par 4, 457 yards
OFF THE TEE (11:52 a.m.): Looked like another good swing with the driver there, tee shot fades just a bit off the fairway and settles in the right rough. He’ll have about 171 yards from there.
APPROACH SHOT (11:56 a.m.): Couple yards away from being really good. Bounced just short of the green and rolled back a bit, he’ll probably chip the next one about 30 feet away from the hole.
ON THE GREEN (12 p.m.): Great third shot there to about a foot, easy tap-in par at the second.
TIGER ON THE DAY: E thru 2
Hole No. 1: Par 5, 506 yards
OFF THE TEE (11:33 a.m.): Confident swing with the driver and we’re off and running. Woods finds the fairway no problem and will have a good chance to reach this opening Par-5 in two shots.
APPROACH SHOT (11:41 a.m.): Had to wait a bit for the group ahead to clear the green and isn’t pleased at all with that shot. Just 195 yards out and he sprayed it short and right, not the start he was looking for after a great opening tee shot. Still a good chance to get up-and-down for birdie here.
AROUND THE GREEN (11:45 a.m.): Decent shot out of a greenside bunker and he’ll have about eight feet left for his birdie try. Important putt right out of the gate, sort of feel like you’re behind the eight ball already if you make par at Riv’s gettable opener.
ON THE GREEN (11:48 a.m.): Didn’t give it a chance and he’ll have to mark again after the birdie try runs past the hole. Sweating over an opening par putt is not the start he was looking for. But he knocks in the three-footer for a disappointing 5.
TIGER ON THE DAY: E thru 1
Genesis Open host Tiger Woods had to wait longer than expected to get things going at Riviera Country Club.
Woods was unable to begin his round Thursday due to a 7-hour rain delay and tees off for Round 1 at 11:32 a.m. ET Friday morning. It will be just his fifth competitive round of 2019 coming off his season debut at the Farmers Insurance Open, where Woods finished strong for a T-20 at Torrey Pines.
This will also make for a lot of golf in a short period of time, with Woods trying to squeeze 72 holes in three days before heading to Mexico for next week’s WGC-Mexico Championship.
