How to Make Pizza Pretzels for Shark Week

By AT&T Digital Media Productions editorial team

Hosting a Shark Week party? Make it a feeding frenzy with these tasty pizza pretzel hybrids! Keep it simple by picking up some premade pretzel or pizza dough, available in many grocery stores, or if you’ve got the patience of a basking shark, make your own. Whatever you do, definitely don’t skip out on making your own spicy tomato sauce. Careful: it’s got a bite!

Tiger sharks will eat just about anything, which probably includes actual life preservers. These taste a lot better, even if you’re not “nature’s trashcan.”

  • 1 lb. premade pretzel or pizza dough
  • 4 oz. thinly sliced pepperoni
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella
  • ¼ cup shredded parmesan
  • Italian seasoning (or mix equal parts dried oregano, garlic powder, and black pepper)

Spicy tomato sauce:

  • 1 28 oz. can crushed tomatoes, preferably San Marzano variety
  • 1 yellow onion, finely diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, finely diced
  • 2 tsp. red chile flakes (or more to taste)
  • 1/4 cup peppery olive oil
  • 1 tsp. each dried thyme and oregano
  • ¼ cup chopped parsley
  • Salt to taste

Make the sauce

In a Dutch oven or saucepan over medium low heat, sauté onions in olive oil until soft & translucent, about 5 minutes. Add salt at the start of the cooking to encourage softening. Add garlic and cook an additional 2-3 minutes. Add dried herbs and chile flakes, increase heat slightly, and cook until the oil in the pan turns slightly red from the chiles. Add canned tomatoes, reduce heat back to low, and cook until liquid is reduced and sauce is thickened to your liking. Before serving, stir in chopped parsley, and season with salt and pepper to taste.

Make the life preservers

Preheat oven according to premade dough directions (450º is probably a good bet if you’re unsure). Roll out dough into ropes, then form ropes into circles. Sprinkle liberally with shredded mozzarella and parmesan, then arrange pepperoni to form a “life preserver” pattern. Sprinkle with italian seasoning and bake until golden brown with bubbling cheese. Serve alongside spicy tomato sauce for dipping.

Bonus: Hang on to your leftover spicy tomato sauce! It’s great tossed with pasta, capers, Italian olives, and a can of tuna (how shark-like).

These pizza life preservers make a great light bite for guests of all ages, so invite your whole crew over to catch Shark Week, only on Discovery.
