Michigan State's interim president John Engler has appointed an interim athletic director.

The school announced Monday that Bill Beekman would serve as Michigan State's interim athletic director while maintaining his duties as vice president and secretary of the MSU Board of Trustees.

"Just as the Board of Trustees had confidence in Bill to keep things moving as acting president, I have confidence that he will provide very capable leadership of the athletic department during this time of transition," Engler said in a statement.

Beekman has served as vice president and secretary of the board since 2008 and was previously the executive director of the MSU Alumni Association.

Engler also said that no internal candidates would be considered in a nationwide search for a permanent athletic director. It remains to be seen whether these changes affect football coach Mark Dantonio's status with the school as more information surfaces regarding the program's handling of sexual assault cases.
