Once you reach a certain age, birthdays become kind of a drag. But at some point, an enterprising 30-something figured out a way to bring back some of that childhood birthday magic: by smashing her face into a cake and having a professional photographer document the whole thing. Obviously.

It sounds absurd, but it caught on. A Pinterest search will show you that this is an actual trend among people entering, or well into, their fourth decade of life.

The Washington Post first covered the phenomenon last year. But search the hashtag #adultcakesmash on Instagram, and you'll see that this is a movement that is alive and well, with new photos surfacing regularly.

I turned 30 yesterday and everyone keeps asking me how I feel... To be alive at any age is a gift that I do not take lightly. I have absolutely no idea how many years, months or weeks I have left to inhabit this body, so I’m just trying not to sleepwalk through whatever time I have left. I’m trying to be as happy as I can be in the present moment, since that is truly all we have. It’s been working out pretty good for me. 😂 I had the best birthday. And I really mean that. My 30th birthday was filled with so much love and laughter, I felt overwhelmed with gratitude at times. I had a princess party, since I’ve never had one as a child growing up in Bosnia, friends far and near came to spend it with me, and I couldn’t help but think...”man, I wish I could tell my 13 year old, foreign, little girl self how much better it gets.” 😂 I was surrounded by powerful, kind, sweet women all day who made my 30 unforgettable. My boyfriend, who’s a fucking rockstar, dealt with 11 drunk girls in tutus, bless his soul. I got to have a quiet, romantic dinner with him after all the partying and it couldn’t have been more perfect. 29 was honestly my best year ever, and I couldn’t think of a better way to enter this new decade of my life. I’m the happiest, healthiest, and the most balanced than I’ve ever been. It truly was the happiest birthday I could have ever wished for. #30thbirthday #dirtythirty #princessparty #30andfabulous #youngAF #adultcakesmash #basic

Here's a woman who did it for her 50th:

It’s easy to assume that the people who have embraced cake smashing are desperately clinging to their youth, but the desire to cover your face in frosting seems to stem from a much lighter place. Most of the posts on Instagram come with captions about enjoying life and having fun, like this woman, who wrote "So here’s to acting a fool, laughing, and running full force into the big 3-0."

If smashing your face into your birthday cake makes you happy, I say do you, birthday boys and girls.
